Travel on the Side

Winter was mild in my part of Wisconsin. You’ll get no complaints from me. Spring has had its ups and downs temperature-wise. Last month I was up in Green Lake for a work conference–my first visit there. Green Lake is a small resort town (pop. of around 1,000)  located about an hour and half from either Madison or Milwaukee. I was there before peak tourist season, so things were still a bit… Read More

Winter finally faded away…or at least it did for a couple of weeks. The trees are budding, the daffodils are up, and things are green again. But now it’s a bit cooler–but I know it’s temporary. I heard a guy on the radio call it “springter” – that weird in-between winter and spring combo. When the weather was nice, made it into Milwaukee. Toured around the old Pabst Brewery and had lunch… Read More

The Glacial Drumlin State Trail in Wisconsin runs from Waukesha (in the Milwaukee area) to Cottage Grove (near Madison) for some 50+ miles. Connecting with other trails, it’s possible to travel between Milwaukee and Madison. A state trail pass is required for biking and in-line skating. Still breezy…but oh what a view! Next, I drove back to the part of the Park Loop Road that was still open (the remainder still closed due to sequestration) and did about a three hour hike… Read More

After waking up in Lubec, Maine (see blog post from yesterday), I got in my rental car and headed west on Maine Highway 189 until it joined US Highway 1 at Whiting. I was on my way to Acadia National Park (I had made my first visit in 2010)! The drive on US Highway 1 is supposed to be pretty, but mother nature had other plans. The whole coast was socked in… Read More

Took a vacation day and ventured up to Door County before summer visitors take over. It was a late May Friday and I still felt like I had a lot of the county to myself. First I drove to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Pierhead Light. Some people think it’s off limits, but it’s not. Just pay attention to the signage and don’t walk on to the U.S. Coast Guard property. After… Read More
