Travel on the Side


Ventured a bit further from the traditional tourist area in New Orleans. This time to City Park. The park is home to the New Orleans Museum of Art and the Besthoff Sculpture Garden. It’s easy to get to. Just board the Canal Street streetcar in the CBD/French Quarter bound for “City Park.” For more photos, check out my New Orleans Flickr album.

My hunch is that not a lot tourists in New Orleans venture beyond the French Quarter. That’s a shame as there are plenty of other things to see. From Canal Street, we boarded the Algiers Ferry (also called the Canal Street Ferry) to take the 10 minute trip across the Mississippi River. If you’ve had your fill of craziness in the French Quarter of New Orleans, then it’s time to head to the peacefulness of the Garden District. From the CBD/French Quarter, you can board the St. Charles Avenue street car at Canal Street. Ahh, the French Quarter of New Orleans: equal parts good food, drunk people, and colorful buildings. Give yourself plenty of time to explore on foot. Besides hitting the usual spots of Bourbon Street, Jackson Square, and Cafe du Monde, allow time to explore all of the side streets.The New Orleans CVB has a nice walking map for self-guided tours.
