Travel on the Side

The leaves are just starting to change here in Wisconsin. Fall has been lovely: a lot of warm days and cool nights. Just about 35 minutes from where I live is Holy Hill, near Hubertus, Wisconsin in Washington County. Holy Hill, as you might have guessed, is home to a church: the Basilica of the National Shrine of Mary, Help of Christians. You can climb the 120+ steps (it’s steep..and crowded on… Read More

Autumn in my favorite time of year in Wisconsin. Changing leaves, chilly mornings, apple cider. Take some time to enjoy nature’s beauty. Here are a few quick photos I’ve snapped over the past two autumns.

I have many good memories of visiting Tahquamenon Falls, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan. I remember racing my dad up and down the wooden steps and then being mesmerized by the power of the falls. We visited when I was kid and again as a teenager. This was my first trip back since the mid-1990s. Tahquamenon Falls actually consists of an upper falls and lower falls, both housed within the… Read More

Had a three-day weekend, so we drove up to the Upper Peninsula of Michigan to do some hiking at Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore. I hate it when people say the U.P. of Michigan is “empty.” Yeah it may not have loads of chain restaurants and parking lots, but it’s full of natural beauty and endless outdoor adventures. We made Munising our home base. Pictured Rocks is spread out across the Lake Superior… Read More

The leaves are at their peak for fall foliage. I headed over to Mount Agamenticus (also known as “Mount A” or “Big A”) to do some hiking. Located near Ogunquit and The Yorks, Mount Agamenticus rises to 692 feet and offers good views of the White Mountains and Casco Bay.

Took a quick drive this afternoon to some rural areas outside of Manchester, New Hampshire. The fall colors are really pretty right now. Spotted some gorgeous colors in…well…some cemeteries. Is that weird? I don’t think so. The first place I pulled in to was the Mt. Calvary Cemetery off of Goffstown Road on the west side of Manchester. After that, I was at the Green Lawn Cemetery in Mont Vernon, New Hampshire…. Read More

Miller State Park near Peterborough, New Hampshire features a road to take you to the summit of Pack Monadnock (2,290 feet) where you’ll have great views of the Wapack Range. After driving to the top, I decided to get in some hiking and view the fall foliage.

On the way back from Acadia National Park, I stopped in Bucksport, Maine, on the Penobscot River. I toured around Fort Knox State Park. The fort was built in the mid-1800s due to anti-British resentment and boundary claims between the UK (with it’s land in Canada) and the US. Fort Knox is also the site of the Penobscot Narrows Bridge. The bridge includes an observatory–the only one of its kind in the… Read More

I had been itching to get to Acadia National Park in Maine. I decided that since I had a three-day weekend, I would make it happen! Because this was a bit of a last minute decision, I ended up staying in a hotel about an hour from the park: the Comfort Inn in Belfast, Maine — a nice place and every room had a view of Penobscot Bay. After checking into my… Read More

Camden, Maine is a picture perfect postcard town on US Highway 1. Just outside of town is Camden Hills State Park. Stopped in to do some hiking at the park. There’s also a road that leads to the top of Mount Battie which gives you great views of Camden and Penobscot Bay.
