Travel on the Side

The lakefront and its festivals are two jewels in the crown that is Milwaukee. For 11 days in late June and early June, the Henry Maier Festival Grounds are home to Summerfest, the world’s largest music festival. Almost all musical styles are represented here. It’s a big event with big headliners. This year featured The Rolling Stones, Keith Urban, Carrie Underwood, Stevie Wonder, and Ed Sheeran–just a small sampling of the acts…. Read More

Ahh…summer in Milwaukee. Time to take advantage of the nice temps and sunny skies. There’s lots to do. Three of my favorite places include the Milwaukee County Zoo, the lakefront at Bradford Beach, and some food at the Northpoint custard stand.

I’m back home in Wisconsin now. My dad passed away after a brief illness. After tending to things at my parents’ house, I decided to take the “long” way back to Wisconsin from Indiana. North to Interstate 75, across the Mackinac Bridge, west through the Upper Peninsula, and down to Wisconsin. This was my dad’s favorite drive–especially the Mackinac Bridge. I think he would be proud. I spent the night in St…. Read More

Visited Navy Pier in Chicago. Great place to view the Chicago skyline. A ride in the ferris wheel is a must-do!

Got up early and drove to the Lake Michigan shore to catch the sunrise (around 6:50am Central time) at the Algoma Pierhead Light in Algoma in Kewaunee County, Wisconsin. A lone fisherman was out on the breakwater. A perfect, it bit chilly, start to the day!

Visiting downtown Milwaukee on the lakeshore when I stumbled upon a kite festival.

In Manitowoc, Wisconsin is the Wisconsin Maritime Museum. One of the highlights is being able to tour the USS Cobia, a World War II era submarine. Manitowoc is also home to the SS Badger, the Lake Michigan ferry that runs between Manitowoc and Ludington, Michigan. It’s about a four hour trip across the lake.

Took a vacation day and ventured up to Door County before summer visitors take over. It was a late May Friday and I still felt like I had a lot of the county to myself. First I drove to the Sturgeon Bay Ship Canal Pierhead Light. Some people think it’s off limits, but it’s not. Just pay attention to the signage and don’t walk on to the U.S. Coast Guard property. After… Read More

Spring has been late in coming to Wisconsin. After work, I ventured over to Algoma, Wisconsin to take some photos of the Algoma Pierhead Light on Lake Michigan. By the time I was done, my fingers were freezing! A stiff breeze was coming off of the lake and it sure didn’t feel like late May. Hope warmer weather comes soon!

Oh fickle Lake Michigan weather! We took a Sunday trip to Point Beach State Forest on Lake Michigan, near Two Rivers, Wisconsin. The sun was shining and we had blue skies when we got there. Then fogged rolled in off of the lake followed by clouds and then some peaks of sunshine. Hiked on a few of the trails through the forest, on the beach, and near the Rawley Point Lighthouse.
