Travel on the Side

All good things must come to end, and so it goes with this cruise. But…long story, short: It was great! I posted this review to CruiseCritic to thank members for the information I gleaned from the site. This was our first cruise on Celebrity and first cruise to the Caribbean. Now with two cruises under our belt, we have a better sense of what we prefer going forward. Embarkation Arrived just before… Read More

I’ll blog more about the cruise itself in my next post. After Saint Kitts, it was two sea days before arriving back into Miami. Our flight was out of Fort Lauderdale, but wasn’t until 5:15pm, so we booked an Everglades excursion and airport drop off through Celebrity Cruises. It was $79 per person (at time of writing). Neither of us had been to the Everglades before, so we thought “why not?” After… Read More

We woke up docked in Basseterre, Saint Kitts. Fun fact: Saint Kitts and Nevis is the smallest independent country in the western hemisphere (in both population and geography). It’s home to around 55,000 people. After breakfast in the Oceanview Cafe, we walked off the ship at around 9:30am and made our way down the pier to Port Zante. In planning the Caribbean cruise, we wanted one day on the islands to be… Read More

Note: We visited Saint Thomas on December 12, 2017 while it was still recovering from severe hurricane damage from Hurricanes Irma and Maria. I am likely to get pilloried here, but I didn’t care for Saint Thomas. There, I said it. But here’s the caveat: It’s entirely ***MY OWN*** fault. See, I can admit my mistakes! So, what was my big mistake with Saint Thomas? I didn’t plan any sort of shore… Read More

After almost two full sea days on our Caribbean cruise, we were ready for a port. Don’t get me wrong; sea days can be relaxing…but we were ready to see some sights! Despite the hurricanes, one thing that did not change on our itinerary was the port stop of San Juan, Puerto Rico. By the time we visited on December 11, 2017, Old San Juan was looking tidy and clean. There were,… Read More

Wisconsin is a great place in the spring, summer, and fall. But winter? You can keep it. For December, we decided to book a Caribbean cruise for some sun n’ fun–if just for a week. In 2016, we did an Alaskan cruise that was AMAZING! Now we wanted to go somewhere warm. Choosing this Cruise I got addicted to reading the boards on Cruise Critic. As only our second cruise we were… Read More

I’ve now lived in Wisconsin for almost 7 years. I grew up in the Midwest, so it’s not a huge change, but thing I hate is winter. Yep, I know I’m in the wrong state. But here I am. For the past few years we’ve taken a warm-weather vacation when it gets colder here. Last year, we went to Orlando–and managed to miss the first big snow storm of the season! In 2014, we did… Read More

Happy New Year! I realized that from this past summer, I did a day-by-day account of our Alaskan cruise, but I never wrapped it up with a trip review. Since this was our first cruise and first time to Alaska, I thought I’d write a little bit about the experience. I’ll be honest, up until now, I never had a strong desire to go on a cruise. Some of it was bad… Read More

All aboard time from Ketchikan was 12:45pm. We wouldn’t dock at our next port, Victoria BC, until around 7:15pm the next day. So, it felt like an extra “sea day.” Again, we were itching to get off the ship as soon as Victoria came into view. Canadian immigration authorities slightly delayed our docking. We were off the ship just after 7:30pm and we had to be back on at 11:30pm. Another short… Read More

After getting off the ship in Ketchikan, we made our way to the pier where a van was waiting to take us to our shore excursion. Several months back I had booked a floatplane sightseeing tour over Misty Fjords National Monument through Island Wings Air Service based off of good reviews from CruiseCritic and TripAdvisor. Quick review: It was awesome! Arriving at the Island Wings office, we walked down a plank and there… Read More

Sailing overnight from Glacier Bay, the Crown Princess docked in Ketchikan at around 7am. It was a short port day. All aboard was 12:45pm. We made the most of it though! We had booked a floatplane sightseeing excursion over Misty Fjords National Monument through Island Wings Air Service–a fantastic experience that I’ll blog more about in my next post. After returning from the Misty Fjords excursion, we had around two hours to… Read More

Getting up early for the sunrise was just part one of an amazing day cruising through Glacier Bay National Park. Part two was the actual glaciers themselves. We got our first glimpse of a glacier shortly after 9am: Reid Glacier. Sailing through Glacier Bay, we were treated to beautiful scenery: At around 9:30am we arrived at Margerie Glacier. The captain stopped the ship and we got to observe for about an hour…. Read More
