South Maui: Sun & Beaches

After three nights in Honolulu, it was off to Maui. We made Kihei, in south Maui, our home base for the next four nights. Only about 30 minutes from Kahului Airport – Maui’s main airport – Kihei is on the dry side of the island, has nice beaches and restaurants, and is just north of the Wailea resort area. We stayed at Maui Coast Hotel. It was close to everything, including good restaurants, and just across the street from the ocean. We also enjoyed their pool and on-site restaurant, ‘ami ‘ami.
Speaking of food: had the best fish tacos at Coconut’s Fish Cafe in Kihei. Also enjoyed some drinks and fresh Hawaiian pizza at South Shore Tiki Lounge, and some good mahi-mahi at the 808 Bistro.
This area has some nice beaches. We lounged at the Kamaole Beaches (numbered I, II, and III) near our hotel. But the highlight was Big Beach in Makena State Park–a beautiful wide expanse of sand. You don’t feel crowded here. Just watch out for the waves though–the shorebreak can be a bit rough!
