Travel on the Side

Back from sunny Southern California. Great trip! I was in Anaheim to give a presentation at a work conference, but scheduled vacation time before it. Good decision. Flew into LAX (the prices were better than Orange County). Didn’t want to deal with LA traffic, so we skipped a rental car. Never came to regret it either. We used Super Shuttle to take us to our hotel in Anaheim. We avoided the expensive… Read More

Still recovering from yesterday! We did a whirlwind full-day tour of downtown Los Angeles, Hollywood, Beverly Hills, and Santa Monica using Starline Tours Hop On-Hop Off pass. We liked the bus tour because it gave us flexibility of where we wanted to go without having to stick to a rigid schedule…and we didn’t have to deal with LA traffic. A win for us! From our hotel in Anaheim, we caught the Orange… Read More

After a one-day pause from theme parks, we did our last one: Universal Studios Hollywood. We signed up for day trip from Gray Line tours in Anaheim. They picked us up at our hotel and deposited us at larger facility where we boarded a shuttle bus to Universal Studios for the (1-1.5 hr trip, depending on traffic). The highlight of the trip is the studio tour. That’s the first thing we did…. Read More

After two long theme park days (Disneyland and Disney California Adventure), we needed a break. It was off to Seal Beach, California. Since we didn’t have (or want) a rental car, we took the regional bus right from our hotel on Katella Avenue in Anaheim to Seal Beach. It cost less than $5, had to make one transfer, and took about 1 hour. Seal Beach is a gem. Not too crowded, places… Read More

The theme park visits continue. Monday was Disneyland. Tuesday was Disney California Adventure. We did the same strategy we used with Disneyland: got up early, had breakfast, and then walked from our hotel on Katella Avenue to Downtown Disney, and got to the park gate right at opening. Again, it was a breeze…no line (because all the lines were inside for each ride, hah!). Disney California Adventure is located right across from… Read More

Disneyland day is here! We walked from our hotel on Katella Avenue in Anaheim, through Downtown Disney, and got to the park gates in about 10 minutes as they were opening. Early on a Monday morning, there were no lines. We ended up spending the whole day at Disneyland–we basically closed the place down. We rode all the rides on our list and visited all themed areas: Main Street USA, New Orleans… Read More

There’s a little slice of old time fun in Green Bay, Wisconsin. It’s the Bay Beach Amusement Park. It features the Zippin Pippin – reportedly Elvis Presley’s favorite roller coaster. The rides are cheap and it’s good family fun.

I’m back home in Wisconsin now. My dad passed away after a brief illness. After tending to things at my parents’ house, I decided to take the “long” way back to Wisconsin from Indiana. North to Interstate 75, across the Mackinac Bridge, west through the Upper Peninsula, and down to Wisconsin. This was my dad’s favorite drive–especially the Mackinac Bridge. I think he would be proud. I spent the night in St…. Read More
